My fellow blogger here at Celtics 24/7 John Collins wrote a great piece on assessing the Celtics offseason moves and the state of being if you will of the roster throughout the summer, and into the rookie leagues. Of course it is hard to assess a roster because one move changes everything, just look at the 2007 Draft lottery. We fell out of the Durant/Oden lottery and we chose free agency of KG and Allen and let Jeff Green go.. who mind you we have re-acquired.
But let’s get back to the point at hand, John wrote a great piece and his analysis is spot on with how we think the Celtics would by all means sanely look at the offseason, but I think there is a monkey wrench about to be tossed in the machine and here is why. I want to look at this offseason from a different angle, the wacky anything is possible view of a rebuilding effort this year.
Regardless how you look at the Perkins trade and his potential leaving in the offseason it may very well have cost the Celtics a title. JO was great, but playing hurt and we never seen Shaq due to injury and Murphy due to not knowing how to play basketball. So again it was left to Nenad who was ok but not for a back up to JO our already hurt center with a broken wrist. If we kept Perkins he may have walked in July, but I believe we would still be in the playoffs today.
So with Danny’s midseason exodus of players and the Celtics playoff crumble Doc was on board awfully quick for a coach that just last year was contemplating retirement and more family time. And mind you that was after a Game 7 loss in the Finals, this year he didn’t even consider it after a playoff bust. Makes you wonder what he and Danny discussed behind closed doors.
- Last year they were just minutes away from a title and Doc considered retirement and then eventually only signed 1 year.
- This year Doc’s team never showed up to play and then he signs just days later for 5 more years.
- That carries him clear through the Big 3 era and into rebuilding.
I don’t think rebuilding is happening in 3 years, I think it is happening the summer of 2011 and we are about to see a major face lift this summer.
Ray Allen is a legend, but will he see the same money anywhere else if he walks away from Boston? I doubt it, especially with a new CBA coming. So unless he is agreeing to some trade he is here.
Paul Pierce is staying put also, not even a chance they will send a career guy packing.
Is there a deal for Rondo? Who knows, he is not happy. Maybe they take a shot at CP3. I hope not.
Is Dwight Howard coming to Boston? Doubtful. But KG said once he didn’t want to be in Boston and look at him now. Speaking of KG he will be in a new uniform next year, you watch.
Is Daron Williams a target or will The Russian lock him up for the move to Brooklyn? Always a mystery, but he stays in NJ/NY.
I have no clue, but something is happening. Think I am wrong? Check out my preseason assessment of the Grizzlies here and here. I was wrong about several things but I am very proud that I did make the outside the box call on the Grizz being the “biggest wild card in the West with such young talent they could really surprise everyone and become a powerhouse and change the balance of power.”
That prediction was a long shot and so is this, the Celtics are betting the farm and it is 2007 all over again this summer.
Think I am way of base? Let me know on Twitter @ObiWanCanubi
I haven’t written much during the season, but I never have had much inspiration about game-to-game analysis, offseason basketball is where my writing passion lies, so expect to see a lot more of my ranting during the summer and fall months.
