Summer League Halftime Notes

Just watching the first half of the Celtics’ first summer league game against the Thunder, here’s what I’ve noticed so far:

  • Our defense looks very good while the Thunder’s offense looks very bad. Can’t decide which is more prevalent.
  • Oliver Lafayette can play and could very well battle for backup point guard duties.
  • Rodney Green reminds me a lot of Tony Allen on the offensive end.
  • Our bigs (Erden, Harangody, Gaffney, Parakhouski) guard the pick-and-roll very well. Look good “showing”on the screen then rotating back to their man.
  • Jaycee Carroll can stroke it from anywhere on the floor.
  • Luke Harangody is, no question about it, the Brian Scalabrine replacement.
  • It seems that we have put a summer league team together with high basketball IQ. How often do you hear that?
  • Oliver Lafayette’s open floor steal on James Harden made me say “wowww!” out loud in my basement by myself.
  • Thunder turned it on at end of the half. Had to expect Maynor and Harden to step it up and Ibaka to dominate on defense.

The question about the Celtics next season is how many of these summer league invites will make the roster. My guess is three. Which three it will be is tough to say, but I’ll guess Oliver Lafayette, Semih Erden and Luke Harangody with Avery Bradley on the roster as well.
