Dwight Howard Would Consider Celtics

Take it for what it’s worth. Here are some Howard quotes regarding potentially playing for the Celtics starting off with would he take the call if Danny Ainge rang:

“Always. Always,” Howard told the Herald. “I’d always listen to a team like that.

“My thing is I want to win. It’s not something like I’m doing this for money. I win. I want to do it my way.”

“The first thing is basketball,” he said. “I want to win a championship, and it takes a certain type of team to win a championship. You know, there’s a lot of teams who are great during the regular season. They play well, but it’s different once you play in those playoffs, you know? It’s gut-check time.

Everything Is Wrong

Wednesday’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks shed some unpleasant light on the Celtics’ situation this season. Let’s start with the obvious.
The team is slow, old and could barely keep up with the Mavericks, a team that is also, old and slow. Rondo is pushing the ball down the court like a man possessed but there is rarely anyone running with him. Pierce had a sluggish night, save for some potential late game heroics, but gave up more points than he scored by not sliding over on help defense. Keyon Dooling and Brandon Bass are good scorers, but defensively liable. Dooling kept double teaming Bradley’s man, when Bradley is one of the few players on the team who can keep his man in check one on one. And then there’s Garnett. I think it’s safe to say that every Celtics fan loves Kevin Garnett, his intensity and fire is real and makes you want to be on his side, but he is not the player he was even a season ago. He can still hit that 12-15 footer, but inside he doesn’t seem to have the confidence when he’s trying to score over defenders and was getting beat to the basket last night, left and right by Dirk Nowitzki, including the three point play that let the Mavs pull away with the win.

So to recap, tough loss for the C’s, off game for Ray and Pierce, and overall decline of Kevin Garnett seems to be more and more apparent. But there are some other things to consider that are just as troubling. First the front office. Watching Delonte West hustle up and down the floor last night not only made me think of what we missed out on last season with his injuries, but also what we’re missing this season. I like Dooling, but is he really an upgrade or even an equal talent to West? I don’t think so. Also there is a huge lack of confidence in the rookies. Moore and Johnson have seen such limited playing time, with Johnson I’m not surprised. He doesn’t have the size to play the power forward in the NBA. But with Moore, I don’t understand why Doc isn’t giving him more minutes. If those two continue to ride the bench we’re going to wish we hadn’t traded away MarShon Brooks (some of us already do).

Stiemsma To The Rescue….Maybe Not

I almost laugh every time I say his name and coming into training camp I had no idea who this guy was and though he would just get cut along with the other camp invites. Boy was I wrong, as Doc kept him on the roster with the lack of Centers on the roster and Jermaine O’Neal almost certain to get injured at some point during the year. Doc along with Danny and the rest of the coaching staff seen something in this 26 year old journeyman from Wisconsin who was the D league defensive player of the year last season. We all like what he brings to the table so far this season in six games but lets not make this guy out to be the next Bill Russell.(although a certain color guy on CSNNE has compared him to the great number 6, he is also the same guy who said Vin Baker was the best low post player the Celtics have had since McHale, I will not mention names) We need to wait and see when he goes up against some of the heavyweights like the Tyson Chandler’s and Dwight Howard’s of the world to really see what this guy has. For now I am going to say he is a nice fit for this Celtics team but lets not go overboard here.

Former Celtic Ricky Davis to Join Red Claws

http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_nba_experts__52/ept_sports_nba_experts-709367417-1272994811.jpg?ym7_eFDDCC0g9ontThe Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, today announced that they have claimed NBA veteran and former Boston Celtic Ricky Davis from the Available Player Pool.

Davis, 32, has played in 736 NBA games in a career that began in 1999 as the first round selection (21st overall) of the Charlotte Bobcats. His 12-year NBA career saw him play for six NBA teams, including three seasons with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics traded the high-scoring swingman on January 26, 2006 to the Minnesota Timberwolves along with Marcus Banks, Mark Blount, Justin Reed, a 2006 2nd round draft pick (Craig Smith) and a 2008 2nd round draft pick (Nikola Pekovic) for Dwayne Jones, Michael Olowokandi, Wally Szczerbiak and a 2009 1st round draft pick (Jonny Flynn). He scored a career-high 20.6 ppg in 2002-03 as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Davis last played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2009-10 and has spent the last season and a half playing abroad in France, Turkey and China. Once considered a one-dimensional yet prolific player, Davis has developed into a formidable rebounder and steady mid-range jump shooter over the years.

“Ricky Davis brings a veteran element to the Red Claws and will undoubtedly become an instant fan favorite at the Portland Expo where many of our fans will remember him from his days with the Celtics,” said Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings. “Ricky is someone who knows what it takes to get to and stay in the NBA and is someone who is hungry to return there. We are all excited to welcome him to Maine.”

Davis is expected to join the team in Canton, Ohio where they will face the Canton Charge tomorrow night in the second game on a two-game set. He will make his Maine debut this weekend as the Red Claws host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Saturday, December 31 at 1 PM and Sunday, January 1 at 5 PM. Great seats remain for both games and may be purchased by calling (207) 210-6655, in person at the Red Claws Team Store located at 413 Congress Street in Portland, or online at www.MaineRedClaws.com.

Boston’s Debut

What looked like what was going to be a Christmas catastrophe nearly turned into a Christmas miracle today as the Celtics fell to the New York Knicks 106-104. Although the loss certainly put a damper on my Christmas spirit initially, we are Boston Celtics fans, we are intelligent fans, and we should understand that this was the first game of the season. We should also understand that Sasha Pavlovic was playing instead of Paul Pierce, if The Truth was on the floor this game could’ve easily been a blowout, but that’s simply hypothetical. The bottom line of the game was that the Knicks came out with more fire and intensity and the Celtics laid an egg coming out of the gate in the first half, and ended up playing catch up ball. If it weren’t for the brilliant play of Rajon Rondo and Brandon Bass, we probably would’ve looked like the Dallas Mavericks today against the Heat. However, with the play of those two, and the coaching of Doc Rivers, the Celtics found their groove in the 2nd half and really made it their game to lose. Barring some questionable technical fouls and a couple miscues on the offensive and defensive side of the ball down the stretch, the Celtics would’ve left the Garden with a win today (and if Pierce was playing it would’ve been a different story).

Paul Pierce, out with a bad heel, would have made it a much different game

So as a result I am not worried, yet. I thought the Celtics looked great in the 2nd half. Apart from Rondo, the starters minus Pierce looked to be in ordinary form and were setting the tone. The bench is completely new this year, and with a shortened training camp, it was obvious it would take some time for them to get comfortable in the system today. Once they got comfortable, I thought the bench looked pretty damn good, primarily because of Brandon Bass. Marquis Daniels looked fine (he just can’t shoot) and Kenyon Dooling was doing his job. Chris Wilcox was sloppy at times, but give it about a month practicing with KG and his play should significantly improve. And once Mickael Pietrus is thrown into the rotation I think this bench will be a lot better than last year’s. Yes we are definitely thin at the center position, but that probably can still be solved by a front office move down the road. However today, we went up against one of the best centers in the league in Tyson Chandler and he had only 3 rebounds in 37 minutes. The Celtics also thumped the Knicks on the glass 41-31. Those are two great signs that they can hopefully build on moving forward.
